Olivet offers new cybersecurity defense concentration

by | 25 Apr 2018

Cybersecurity defense is now a concentration in the computer science major offered by the Department of Computer Science in the Martin D. Walker School of Engineering at Olivet Nazarene University. Reed Hall of Science is the home for the university’s new cybersecurity lab, and enrollment is now open for fall 2018.

“Cybersecurity is one of the most important technical fields in today’s world,” said Houston Thompson, dean of the Walker School of Engineering. “By 2019, there will be an estimated global shortage of nearly 2 million cybersecurity employees and consultants. Olivet is committed to preparing trained professionals to fill what will only be an increasing demand in this field.”

Students who choose Olivet’s cybersecurity defense concentration will be part of industry partnerships, collaborative and project-based learning, and opportunities to earn professional certifications. This carefully designed curriculum aligns with criteria set by the Center of Academic Excellence in Cyber Defense Education, the U.S. Department of Homeland Security, and the National Security Agency’s Knowledge Units.

With the dedication of the Martin D. Walker School of Engineering in 2015, computer science and engineering majors at Olivet accelerated to a new level of professional training. At Olivet, computer science majors develop innovative and problem-solving skills while preparing for their careers. They have opportunities to participate in competitions, present their research at conventions and meetings, and network with successful professionals. Quality learning and mentoring, combined with character development and leadership opportunities, consistently yield success for Olivet computer science graduates.
